What a receipt should show

A useful receipt names who paid and who was paid, the date, what the money was for, how it was paid and the amount. If only part of the total was paid, it should show the balance still owed. Leave “amount paid” empty for payment in full.

Keeping records

Give each receipt its own number and keep a copy. Some kinds of receipt, such as those for tax purposes, have required details that vary by place, so check what applies to you.
